Writing Exercises - Storytelling Structure

Map the Storytelling Structure of an Article

Pick an article that you like and narratively map out its storytelling structure. As an example, see how I mapped the structure of my article “When Good Firms Do Bad Things” In Chapter 2. Write a 2-3 page summary that answers the following:

  1. Identify each part of Freytag’s Pyramid. How is each part handled? What were the issues the authors faced? How do they tie and unravel the knot?

  2. Identify the main and supporting characters. Explain why you think they are either a main character or a supporting character.

  3. Identify the key storyline(s) and overarching theme of the article. How do the storyline(s) relate to each other and the theme?
