Writing Exercises - Build an Introduction

Build and effective Introduction

Ace Beorchia developed an outline structure based on my article with Adam Grant (Grant & Pollock, 2011) about setting the hook and writing effective introductions. My book chapter on Introductions describes an expanded version of this template. You can use my article or book chapter and Ace’s outline to 1) analyze one or more published articles’ introductions as a form of disciplined practice; and then 2) either write your introduction by filling in each part of the outline, or take an existing introduction you’ve already written and use the outline to assess whether you’ve done all the things a good introduction asks for.
